Who doesn’t love stepping away from a project for a few minutes for a much needed break?
We all love it because we all need breaks. But what should we do during those short periods between creative bursts?
It’s easy. Have some fun! With our computers never far away, take the time to try out some of the many fun things to do on the web.
We don’t have to just sit around bored. It’s time we start enjoying our breaks and maybe even getting a little more out of them. Here are just a few things to try yourself.
Taking Breaks Is Beneficial
We’ve all heard that breaks are evil and take away precious time from design projects, but breaks are actually beneficial. So, before you subscribe to that line of thinking, stop now.
Think about it like this. What happens when you go without sleep for a few days? You go all Walking Dead on the world, minus the trying to eat brains part. Our brains aren’t meant to go without sleep. Focusing too long on the same thing without a break has the same result. Besides, breaks boost productivity and creativity. Total win-win!
1. Pick Up A New Skill
Okay, so heading to a virtual classroom might not sound like fun, but it’s actually one of the most fun things to do on the web. Get all those memories of boring classes during high school out of your head. This is something fun that you have complete control over.
Besides, imagine saying you learned a foreign language for an upcoming vacation, all during a few daily breaks a day. Learning is beneficial and we could always use a new skill or two. Try out Pick The Brain, INC and Creative Boom for incredible lists of free educational sites to try out today.
Warning – learning might just become addictive. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
2. Explore Social Recommendations
We are always checking Facebook, Instagram and whatever the latest trending social site might be. How about a little change of pace? Then again, if you’re like us, you may already be using sites like Reddit and StumbleUpon to check out some of the best content and even some hidden gems. Bookmarking and forum style sites are always full of fun stuff.
What makes social sites like these so great? You never know what you’re going to find. That what makes them some of the most fun things to do on the web. Personally, we love Reddit since there doesn’t seem to be an interest that’s not listed.
3. Boost Creativity
How do we know when it’s time to take a break? All our creativity is gone. It’s like we hit a major roadblock that somehow hit us back. No, it’s not fun at all.
The solution – try out some fun things to help boost our creativity. Get a much needed dose of inspiration and get those creative juices flowing like Niagara Falls. Let this great list from Escape Motions start the creative journey.
4. Play With Legos
Just stop and look at that headline a moment. Doesn’t it make you feel like you’re five years old again without a single care in the world? Us too. That’s the whole point.
We might not have the time to get out a giant bin of Legos during a break, but one of the absolute most fun things to do on the web is playing with virtual Legos. How awesome is that!
Thanks to Build With Chrome, this is a reality. Don’t take our word for it. Take a break and try it out yourself.
5. Stop Taking Things So Seriously
Let’s face it – we all take things way too seriously some times. Add in the fact that it’s an election year and frankly, it’s way too much seriousness for anyone.
We all want some fun things to do on the web, so why not find things that makes us laugh? Hilarious sites often get buried under all the heavy news stuff. Set up some bookmarks or even add some sites to your favorite RSS reader.
From satire to comics, MakeUseOf has the perfect list of funny sites to keep all of us laughing throughout our breaks. Just a warning, some sites have some NSFW content, so don’t visit those sites if you’re working in an office.
While we appreciate you taking the time to read this highly useful post, go ahead and take that break now. We won’t hold it against you. Do like us and take several much needed breaks throughout the work day. Your mind and your creative genius will thank you.
